Who are we?

Instructors at the Student Art Association are dedicated to sharing their artistic knowledge. Many of our instructors work as professional artists either full-time or part-time and have had formal artistic training. Additionally, quite a few of our instructors have also had training in the sciences (some are MIT alums or current students) and are eager to discuss the chemistry or physics behind the media they work in.

The majority of instruction at the Student Art Association is technical in nature—instructors provide guidance in developing skills in a particular medium. Content-based classes are often more difficult to teach, but can provide a tremendous amount of inspiration for students seeking to use their technical skills in a larger artistic project.

Our Instructors are all affiliated with MIT, and have spent a significant amount of time at the Institute so they understand the pressures MIT can have on students and try their best to be supportive with students who might miss a class or two—remember, you are taking these classes to relax and have fun!

Office Staff

The Student Art Association has a staff of current MIT students who manage class registrations and maintain the website. Staffers also interview new instructors and organize art-related events for the MIT community. We hold regular office hours throughout the term where you can pop in to ask for help with registration, provide suggestions for current and future classes, or just talk about art. We are all heavily involved in the arts at MIT, and are excited to have you participate in them.

If you are interested in joining the student staff, email saahelp@mit.edu.

Sam Magee is the coordinator of the Student Art Association, and our bridge with the Office of the Arts. He holds regular office hours throughout the term in W20-424, and is available to answer questions and provide resources for more art-related things at MIT. Sam wants to get you excited about art!
