Street Photography
Section 1: Saturdays 1:30pm-4:00pm, John Nikolai
(12 spots remaining) [register]
Fee: $40.00/$80.00
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY Street photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions, and other settings (Wikipedia). In this class, students will learn different approaches to street photography through actively doing it and by studying the work of some of the great master street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Weegee and Godlis. The class will explore what makes a good street photograph. What characteristics should a photographer look for in a subject that will increase the chances of getting an interesting street photograph? In this class, students will photograph subjects without the subjects knowing it. Students will also photograph strangers who are aware that a camera is being aimed at them. A goal for the course will be to help the photographers overcome their shyness or hesitance about photographing subjects who have not asked to or consented to being captured on film. The advantages of being seen photographing and of remaining unseen will both be explored. Discussions will include rights of privacy and legal considerations. There will be trips to locations in the Boston area where students will find a variety of subjects and there will be meetings with some well-known street photographers discussing their techniques and philosophies. Previous experience photographing is desirable but not required to take this class.
Introduction to Gum Bichromate Printing - soup to nuts
Workshop (see dates below), Theresa Mislick
(3 spots remaining) [register]
Fee: $80.00/$200.00
Instructors: Thery Mislick, Graham Ramsay. Attendance: required for entire workshop. Preregistration: required (must register by Jan. 9). This five day intensive workshop is designed to introduce students to the beautiful, dynamic, and versatile world of gum bichromate printing. One of the earliest photographic printing processes, gum printing utilizes a contact negative to produce delicate, painterly images that use watercolor paint as the pigment of their emulsions. The basic process is quite simple and fun. Once learned, the process can be duplicated simply in a variety of environments without the requirement of a traditional darkroom. Gum printing also permits a high degree of artistic expression, as each practitioner can personalize his or her technique to best suit their needs. This class will cover all aspects of gum process: paper preparation, negative preparation, and the printing itself. Students will bring three to five black and white prints to first class session; these images will be scanned and an ink-jet negative will be produced. These negatives will then be used to produce the gum prints in class. Beginners welcome, although some basic photo experience will prove helpful. For questions about the workshop, please contact Graham Ramsay, or Thery Mislick. Limited enrollment.
Workshop dates: Jan 22, 6:00pm-10:00pm; Jan 23, 10:00am-4:00pm; Jan 29, 6:00pm-10:00pm; Jan 30, 10:00am-4:00pm; Jan 31, 10:00am-4:00pm
